Thanked: 2Friend of mine has a couple of Merkur Solingen razors
I had asked if anyone I knew shaved with a straight razor and he said he had tried to use one of the 2 he has. He didn't try again. So I messaged to see if they were special to him or if he would be willing to part with them. He said he would be willing to part with them. So I am going to check them out when he is in town for Christmas.
Does anyone know anything about Merkur straight razors? Does anyone have one? I can't seem to find anything but safety razors when I try to Google them. Even specifying Merkur straight razor brings up safety razors. They look pretty, and one of them is a little smaller than the other.
By the sound of it they need to be honed. I have found a couple of places in the Nashville area that do it professionally. I only found prices on one of the websites and it seemed pretty reasonable.

Not familiar with those razors, but I do have a Merkur brush that is quite nice. As for honing, I would recommend sending to a pro like Glen (Gssixgun) to make sure they get done right!

Thanked: 2591I have an 8/8 one and it is a superb shaver. I have also honed a 13/16 size carbon one and it took a superb edge. I have a Stainless on the bench waiting for scales never honed one of those before but expect to be good.

Thanked: 2These are them. I dig the look of the black one and if I only get one it will probably be that one but the other is pretty too.

Thanked: 3228Those are vintage Merkur SRs in what appears to be very good condition. Those, I think, were from before Dovo took over the name STRAZORS.com - all about classic razors - DOVO, Fritz Bracht, Solingen, Germany. . I don't think they make them like they used to now.

I've got a couple of them, and a Hermes (pre-Merkur) and they are as good as it gets. Those look to be in great shape. Don't take them to some knife/razor sharpener. Get them pro honed by a razor honer ........ but get them.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 2Cool Bob. I am intrigued by them and it seemed a shame he wasn't using them.
