Thanked: 0Grandfather's f.a. clauberg tonsorial gem
I inherited fa clauberg tonsorial gem from my grandfather (through my dad recently as a gift) and using it did not go well. I watched a few videos online, it 'feels sharp' to me...whatever that's worth, and I tried it on some 3-day stubble on my cheeks (I have a beard) and I can't get a single whisker removed. Newb-alert.
What's a guy to do? I'm BRAND new to this but would really find it gratifying to learn to use my great-grandfather's razor.

Welcome aboard,,,,,,
Consider sending the razor out to be honed by one of the members here in the link provided.
Then read through the library & get your equipment in order for when your razor returns.
Take your time & enjoy the journey.

Welcome! There is a big difference between "feels sharp" and "shave ready".
If you sharpen knives, then think about it like this: where you stop sharpening a knife is usually where you are simply setting the bevil before even beginning to hone a straight!
Feel free to ask any questions, and how about a picture of your grandad's razor?

Thanked: 4827Just a note, be very careful with that razor. There is only one way you can get an heirloom razor, and if it gets damaged that's that. Two things, one you should buy an inexpensive razor to learn with and you should send that one out to get honed. The only way to know for certain that you have a shave ready edge is to have someone who know set you up.
It's not what you know, it's who you take fishing!

Hi and welcome. Will second sending tp a pro(not a knife shop) and finding another razor to learn on. My first is pretty useless now with all the honing I did fixing all the dings and drops etc. Put your grandads away after honing a keep it for special occasions etc until all the newbness is done with
My wife calls me......... Can you just use Ed

Welcome to SRP!
I'll third the suggestions to have your granddad's professionally honed and buy another one to learn on.
The razor you learn on you will probably drop and/or bang against the sink. Lots of people mess up their first straight - myself included.
And nobody wants to mess up an heirloom.
While you are waiting for your sharp things to arrive, start reading the beginner's section in the library. And feel free to ask us any questions that you have. We are here to help. Some people never go crazy. What truly horrible lives they must lead - Charles Bukowski

Thanked: 12I would LOVE to have the opportunity to shave with the same razor my great grandfather used. With that in mind I second the above posts in saying to send it to a PRO from here on this site to have it honed. In the meantime get another cheap razor to learn on and save the one of a kind heirloom for special occasions AFTER you have the skills to use and care for it.

I was about to post this in our Clubman Friday Thread.
My Grandfathers HMC, one of two razors that my Dad gave to me on Fathers Day a few years ago.
I sent them off to Glen / Complete Restoration and Honing services - Straight Razor Place Classifieds to hone and tighten the pins. IMO the classifieds at SRP are the best place to look for someone to tune up your razor.
Heirloom razors are special - we are only the current caretakers...
