Thought I'd give an update on my bevel setting as well as thank you all for your help with it.
It's finally coming along! Spent hours on it but it's beginning to pay off. Did x strokes on the 1k till it seemed to be getting a bit sharper. Then moved on to pyramid honing with my 4K/8k combo. Razor still wasn't quite sharp enough so I went back to the bevel, but a bit lighter. Then back to the 4K/8k only this time started with almost double the laps, and right now the razor is even sharper. Not sure if it's sharp enough but either way, at I'm on track and will no doubt have this thing in shaving condition soon. Thanks again! Can't wait to finally shave with a straight for the first time. Very excited!

    Charlie,

You probably know this but you've got to make sure the bevel is set before going to the 4/8k. Otherwise you're wasting your time as the pyramid method probably isn't going to pick up the slack that you didn't complete on the 1k. It will just be polishing two separate faces..

There are multiple tests to do this..
Unless you prefer pulling, uncomfortable edges.. that I do not know.

If you're not sure it's sharp enough there are tests for that also... I am not so keen on bringing a razor to my face that doesn't pass at least one of my personalized tests. You've gotta figure out what works for you.

    Best of luck..

    @ solitarysoldier-
Actually, I used the thumbnail test and tested it on cutting some leg hair. It MAY have passed both tests but I'm new to this so I wasn't 100% sure. The tnt seemed like a pass and the razor cut hair off my leg fairly well without too much effort so I figured it was worth a crack at moving on to pyramid on the 4K/8k. Unfortunately though, When I attempted to shave with it this morning, it was pretty dull still... So Back to the 1k I guess

Work it on 1k until it shaves arm hair easily if youre using that test and look at it under some magnification. That is your friend. ...

Don't move on until you are 100% sure it's set.

Here's a video of Dr Matt. I enjoyed it. May be worth a watch if you haven't seen it.

Thanks a lot. I have seen this video but only a few minutes. I'll check it out. Btw, when I begin setting the bevel again, ya think I should use very light pressure strokes or go firmer?

Depending on where you are with it now, you start with firm and transition to very light. Also, be sure to regularly change the tape, especially when you are about to finish with the 1k.

Ah ya know what? Another question just came to mind-
Is it possible to overhone when setting a bevel, or is that only possible when doing regular honing after bevel is set?

At the bevel set stage, overhoning simply is wasting of steel.
