Thanked: 0New Straight
Hey guys. Firstly thanks for all the advice and tips and especially the videos on this forum. I have been reading and watching for months now and it's been very valuable information.
Now to my beginners issue. Simply put. I don't know if the blade I have finally purchased is honed. Of course I know that it is likely it is not since its new. However as I am sure all beginners do I purchased a "ready to go" blade.
If it is at all possible to tell from those photos could you let me know. Would rather not use it until it's ready.
Cheers Noel

Well, that's a bummer. The razor is made by Giesen & Forsthoff who - rightfully, I would like to add - appear on this list: Brands of Straight Razors to Avoid - Straight Razor Place Library. Will it be shave ready? I would say you stand a 25% chance, probably less. Has it been honed? Yes, if you count "dragging a finished razors across some hones in no apparent order and irrespective of the shape of the resulting edge."
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the answer to your question was just one click away from the SRP's Frequently Asked Questions - Straight Razor Place Library...

Welcome to SRP!
I'm not familiar with that maker and seeing how it is on the avoid list I've got a bad feeling about it.
I can tell from your pictures that the bevel is not set properly and it appears that the blade geometry is off a bit. That stuff can be fixed.
It may or may not be heat treated properly - that's a little more difficult to fix.

Thanked: 220If in doubt, get it honed. My first razor was a Giesen & Forsthoff, and although it's been proven to be a bit difficult to hone, it still shaves well and the edge lasts a long time. A lot of people aren't big fans of G&F, but mine was a gift from my Wife, and I like it, so I'll never get rid of it. Maybe mine was made on a Monday, and not a Friday....

Is it new of vintage. The vintage ones were good razors the new have mixed reports. I know of a few people saying once dialed in were ok but took a bit to get right. If you can't catch up with Carl then I'm sure Oz can sort it out
