Red face My first Sr shave

First SR shave ever tonight. Got this razor from the classifieds. I love it.

Equipment: razor, water, towel, after shave powder. It's all I had so that's what I used.

    Notes:
    1. Get better at shaping. I just wanted to trim and shape the top of my beard but got carried away and took two fingers too much off. Lol

    2. The area around the middle of my throat seems to b the most awkward to get a good angle on.

    The bad:
got about 4-5 tiny nicks on my neck.
I don't have a strop yet so I'm not sure how many more shaves I will get before that is an issue.

    The good:
I am keeping most of my facial hair so that makes it easier.
As nervous as I was about slitting my throat open and bleeding to death on the bathroom floor prior to shaving with it, it was incredibly relaxing.

    Questions.

When I go to the barber I get a hot towel, some gel junk that makes my face fee hot and tingly, then shaved then some type of something that makes my face feel COLD and tingly.

Do you know what the hot and cold stuff is?

Try using a strip of newspaper as a makeshift strop for the moment. The hot and cold is usually menthol etc products. Can aid in softening the beard and numbing the skin before and again the numbing and a cooling effect for comfort after. I don't think much of them as they tend to mask any issues you have that should be rectified.
My wife calls me......... Can you just use Ed

Hot and tingly, not too sure. Cold and tingly is definitely menthol. I like menthol products for hot and humid days. There are some tutorials for denim strops as well. This way you can do a fabric then newspaper stropping on the cheap and quick. Newspaper is a good practice, easy to replace if you slice 'er up. There should be a few tutorials popping up if you try out the search.

Nothing like a good piece of history and there's a ton of information on strop restoration on here. And if you get lost, someone can help!

I actually Loved the menthol. To be honest i am not used to all of this extra stuff at all. I have dry shaved for about 20 years now, but after my first attempt fresh out of the shower the blade was jumping and Since i didnt want to die I used hot water.

I will be looking up some denim tutorials too! Thanks!
