Thanked: 2Is a disposable a good comparison?
So I have been shaving for several weeks with the set on the right. (zero cost, and a good test to see if I really enjoy it or not)
Got the shave creams and brush next, which really felt great. (at least the times the lather worked out)
Just got the Dovo, stropping on newspaper at the moment. (never sent it out to hone)
Shaved with it twice.
The first time, not as smooth as the disposable. A little bit of tugging.
Stropped for a long time, and the second time was much better.
Reading through the forum, it is suggested that the first razor should be sent out to be honed, and to not strop it, to get an idea of how it should feel.
I am wondering if the disposable is a good comparison to use as a guide for feeling.

The straight should definitely be sent out to be professionally honed. It will make a world a difference in the shave.
The disposable will give a comparable shave to a straight. I think the straight gives a more comfortable shave and most days the straight is a little closer.
One difference between the two is the shave angle. You hold a straight at a lower angle to your face (about 2 spine widths) than you do a disposable.
Overall, I find the difference in shaves between the disposable and a straight to be about a 3% difference - so pretty darn close to each other. Some people never go crazy. What truly horrible lives they must lead - Charles Bukowski

Thanked: 2Thanks for the response.
I have been stropping like crazy, and am able to get a comparable shave to the disposable.
By comparable, I mean the feeling of the WTG shave, and the feeling of my skin afterword.
I did notice that the angle was different. The disposable was a little easier to handle because of the width.
I like the weight of the straight, it feels a lot better in my hand.
For my next straight (...) I'll get it honed, then if I find it a significant difference (which I very well might), I'll send this one out.

New Dovo's only have a manufacturer's bevel on them. You strop it all you want, but that isn't going to set to the bevel. Get it honed.

I didn't toss out the disposables because they did not shave close; I tossed them out for a very different, much more enjoyable shaving experience.

Thanked: 60If you are getting a comparable shave with a shavette that's pretty good. The big thing is if it not as comfortable against the grain as the shavette then it may need some work
