So simple its scarey!
What's with all of the dread that people around me have been attempting to instill within me?
All I can say is: If you want to try it, ignore what everybody around you says and just do it!
It's really quite simple to use a straight razor when you let your blade do all of the work, isn't it?
Now that I have learned that simple fact, all I need to do is make some tweaks to my technique in order to get a perfect shave.
"Let your tool do the work" sounds just like what my father kept on telling me when he was teaching me how to use a wood plane!
A remarkably similar implement:
* Keep your blade sharp
* Keep your angle consistent
* Keep your speed consistent
* Keep your pressure consistent
* Let your tool do all of the work for youLast edited by howdydave; 06-11-2016 at 04:12 PM.

Thanked: 3215Yea, what TC says does have the loud ring of truth.
Yup. it really is easy, as famously said, “till it’s not”.
If, you can keep it simple, will help, but as most of us are here because, we think there is more… smoother, sharper, better, or just Over thinking.
Read the threads and you will find guys trying, to re-invent the wheel, hone or strop on some magical, inexpensive, this or that, or just think that there is only one way, their way, to do something.
But, for hundreds of years, guys have been honing on one stone, stropping on any available leather, even their hands, and have shaved perfectly fine, all over the world.
Yea, the grits have gotten insanely finer/smaller, and maybe synthetic stones are better, but very fine, aggressive barber hones have been around for a hundred years, that still work great today, problem is most of those folks are dead and literally took the secrets with them.
So, if you can keep it simple, you will be miles ahead, but most of us find ourselves circling around one or another rabbit hole…
Enjoy and as another famous dude says, “Have Fun”.

The fact that it's simple, gives the newbie hope. The fact that it's not, keeps it interesting.

Thanked: 580Best advice is don't get over confident. Hope the damage to your razor wasn't too bad, but if it is removing leather from your strop, it's gonna need a re-hone.
