I spent time in Penkridge (mostly in the pub) in the mid 80s and it always amazed that the accents of people from there and Wolverhampton were so distinct, despite the towns being so close to one another.

That's probably because you have been tainted by your time on the internet!

    welcome aboard
I would suggest you best practice on yourself also on legs & arms etc as much as possible, this will help with he feeling of the pressure & angles required as well as train your lather building skills.

as a Str8 shaver it takes a good 100 plus shaves before it starts to really click together & this is felling it all as you go, so as a external shaver you are disconnected & limited to the feedback of the pressure you are applying.

I have had 5 shaves from different barbers in Australia and they all had issue with pressure, shaving dry skin or poorly made lather.
Lather is not just dipping your brush into some WHAL shave cream & applying it to a face there is a water & cream mix required to build the lather right.
Please regardless of what you are taught, DO NOT shave dry shin if there is no lather or it is drying out re-apply it as you go your clients will thank you for this.

shavette's feel & shave different to true straights so possibly stick to what you use every day.

I have found shavette's to feel harsher & all but 1 barber (a fairly new girl with well less than 100 shaves under her belt) have done at least half the shave with one of my str8s but resorted back to the shorter bladed shavette's to finish the final touch ups & all but 1 have left me feeling like my face was peeled

Now I have received a gift for a shave with a new Barber in town, an old guy that is meant to have decades of experience, so will see how that goes also.

I wish you luck in your chosen profession the more you learn the more return customers you will get I am sure.

Welcome Tiffaney, you will find a lot of information on here regarding razors, blades, technique, etc and of course these are important. However, one thing that gets overlooked is the preparations for the shave. That is, the use of pre-shave oil (for slickness), creating the appropriate lather (for cushion), etc. these things in place will help to achieve a smooth and comfortable shave. Best of luck, hope you find the information you are looking for. Have a great day.

If you are using a shavette type razor, make sure the blade is sharp. I go to a place that uses them for neck mostly, but the do face shaves too. It always seams like the blade is a little dull, or maybe the angle is wrong or something; some tugging, some razor burn. Happens almost every time I am in for a hair cut.

I'll offer a grand welcome to a new UK member. At least one of us appreciates good humor. And because I simply can't resist now that the door has been nudged open and there simply must be a karmic balance to all the serious (excellent) advice.
