Thanked: 0First straight on a budget
So I've been looking into straight razors for a while and I believe it's finally time to buy one! I have around $65 saved up that I'd be willing to spend, I'm looking for a good starter razor to practice with that might last me a while, I'll also be practicing for barber college if that effects what I should get as well. I've been looking at whipped dog and could afford a surprising number from their site, I've also been browsing the straightrazorplace classifieds but I'm still kinda stuck, anyone have advice? Suggestions? Any and all help is greatly appreciated thanks

Thanked: 634Just a thought. I was under the impression that a straight was held at a different angle than a shavette. If you are going to barber school, you will probably learn to use the shavette. As far as I know barbers cannot use a straight for sanitary reasons in most states. The straight would be OK for personal use.

Most barbers use shavettes so if for college and clients thatvis likely what you will need. For personal use I would stick with the classifieds as for the same price you will get a better razor. Just remember that you will need a strop as well for a straight.

Thanked: 2See if the barber college that you go to has resources to get you a shavette for cheap.
For me, my first was a shavette I got off of a hair stylist student after their exams (for free).

Thanked: 0I do happen to have a cheap shavette that I could use if I bought more blades. I still would like to get a straight for myself. Here's a couple I've been looking at: Whipped Dog Straight Razor Shaving Equipment

Thanked: 1184Either 1 is good. Want me to toss a quarter ? Something else to remember is a strop if you go with the straight.Soap and a brush you can still get at the drug store for 15 bucks or so. Won't be long and you will be renting out your car to buy shave stuff :<0)
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

Id go the Genco simply because it is in better condition with far less hone wear. The hone wear on the whipped dog razor is also uneven
