Thread: Women and Straight Razors

You need to stick with the DE for her, especially since she shaves in the shower, and more than likely the novelty of the straight will wear off, not to mention the learning curve of keeping it shave ready, as a new guy you will more than likely give her some razor rash because of poor edges. The DE will give her all the nostalgia and antique personna that is needed, they have been around a hundred or more years,,

In all honesty, I can't see her jettisoning Fusion convenience for straight razor shaving. However, I can see her loving an antique straight razor. She loves collecting antiques. Were I to get her an antique straight razor, she'd have the best of both of her worlds: an antique to display and a Fusion in her shower.

This is not, of course, necessarily an either-or question. If you feel that she would like a straight for collecting purposes regardless of whether she chooses to use it to shave, then by all means go for it! (BTW: Boker King Cutter is a fine razor). But at the same time, you can also go the practical route and get her a DE for daily use. They don't have to be at all pricey and they work wonderfully well.

I love your choice of straight razors. I've been in to this for a month, and I already own two Solingen Bokers: an Arbolito and an Edelweiss. I was thinking exactly as your advice: King Cutter.

If it's Solingen Boker, I want it. I own three Solingen Boker hunting knives. One is too beautiful to use, so I bought a Buck Vanguard for actual use. My Tree Brand Classic 2002 folding hunting knife has gotta be closing in on 30 years-old. It works as fantastically as the day I bought it. I just sharpened it in anticipation. I hope to be using it again in a couple weeks. Venison jerky is good stuff. But sometimes those darn venisons don't cooperate!!! ;-)

Years ago, my girlfriend and I talked about how we both began shaving with safety razors. Neither of us liked them. I honestly believe that she'd use a straight razor before she'd use a DE razor, assuming a DE is a safety razor. I used to cut the heck outta my face with safety razors. She, like most women, didn't like shaving bumps that are notorious with safety razors. Razor bumps, I believe, result from poor quality shaving cream.

I'm going to buy a straight razor for her for Christmas. I don't think that she'll convert unless the difference is noticeable in terms of smooth legs. Stubble doesn't cause her to grab a razor. Noticeable hair does...most of the time. She will cheat if she's short on time and can wear pants. Hence, her affinity for convenience. She likes to be able to jump in a shower, grab her Fusion, and be done with it. She's come over my house in shorts, put her heels (one at a time) on my bathroom sink counter, apply my Neutrogena shaving cream on her legs, grab my Fusion, shave, wipe her legs with a towel, be done within minutes and ready to go out.

I have explained Solingen steel to her. In fact, she used to have Brand "X" kitchen knives that wouldn't cut melted butter. She thought that they were good knives. I used to become frustrated when I used them. So I bought her a two-piece Henckels set: an 8" chef's knife and a 5" utility knife. I can't recall the model, but they were Solingen. I believe it was the model that replaced the old Twin Cuisine line. I have old Twin Cuisine knives, and they are beyond excellent. She's told me that they're the sharpest and best quality knives she owns. She never realized how an excellent quality knife would make cooking and serving a lot easier. She has told me that she could use a new set of steak knives. And I could use Honda CRF 450. She does have a sense of humor.

The way I have it figured, she'll have a good-quality straight razor should she want to use it. If she wants to display it with her antiques, I'd be good. If she were to use it to cut wood, I'd need a double scotch...or bottle.
