    Default clueless

Wanting to get in this straight razor shave way of life. I'm 19 and been shaving with a gillet fusion razor for about 6 years. I am unasatisfied in the way that the shave is. I've changed blades before but don't get that satisfying feel of a clean shave or refreshness. I know how to shave correctly but I have an urge to try out this straight razor but don't know where to start or how to shave with one. I've had straight razor shaved with my barber and love the feel I have during and after the shave. That is the feel I want when I shave myself, the feel inventness. So any tips on how to begin?

    Welcome from SE Washington State.

Where to begin? At the beginning of course. Start reading the WIKI as many if not most of you questions will be found there.

The more you learn before you start the better off you'll be.

Also keep in mind that this age old art takes Patience and without it you will either struggle or fail. With that said if you are willing to go slow and take your time to learn you will find a wonderful world of shaving.

You will need some basic equipment:

    A properly honed straight razor
    A decent strop
    A decent brush
Some 'Real' shaving soap as the canned goop doesn't cut it.

If 'After' you've done some reading and still decide that you have the patience to learn this art, please contact me as I'll see what I can do to help you out with some equipment.

OH!!! Please go back and fill in your Profile as to where you are as there might be experienced help close by. Also it helps if you let us know a bit more about you, such as other interests, employment etc.

This age old art has a huge learning curve but once semi mastered will bring years of pleasant and rewarding shaves.

It's a long strange trip but well worth the journey

    Welcome, Jose

Here is a link that will help you find members in your area. A little time spent with an experienced SR shaver will pay off in spades.

    Welcome to the forum.

You might find at first that your results are not as good as they were with your plastic cheese grater, but stick with it things will improve. There is a long learning curve with this hobby but you will love shaving and look forward to it. Expect that the shaves will take much longer too so set that time aside.

The biggest thing that I have learned and wish that I knew it from the beginning is don't use any pressure. Before you begin your journey read up on what razor might suit you but make sure you buy it from a reputable dealer and most importantly make sure it is shave ready.

Spend some time in the beginners area on this forum it is full of really helpful advice.

+1 on everything that Cudarunner said too.

Take your time and enjoy. Porl.

Welcome to SRP. Where to start? I would advise you to start with a brush and shaving soap. You can use it with your fusion and learn how to make a proper lather. That way you're not trying to figure everything out all at once. Once you get good at lathering you can get to the straight.

I will be putting a package in the mail for Jose either today or tomorrow (I'm waiting for UPS to pick up an Amazon return so I need to be home)

    The package will include

A brush, a bowl, a 2" SRD strop, a puck of soap and a Shave Ready Genco straight razor.

I do hope he will enjoy the gift. This was made possible by Mike Horn's sister Jen.

    http://straightrazorpalace.com/conve...ml#post1683741

He will be the 1st recipient of what I've decided to call The Micheal Horn Foundation

After all of Mike's equipment has been donated and when I help a Member out in the future, it will be sent as part of the Foundation as others have sent me equipment to pass along so I can't always take the credit.

    NOTE:

The package is in the mail and should land on Thursday December 1st as it was sent with USPS Priority which includes tracking and insurance.
