If you have a new, high-quality razor, and it's reasonably sharp:
. . . Don't learn to hone using that razor!
Just strop it, and shave with it. If you feel that it's getting dull, make a pasted strop and use that occasionally.
Get something inexpensive from eBay, and learn on that. Much cheaper mistakes, that way.
. Charles. . . . . Mindful shaving, for a better world.

I will second Utopian, Naniwa 12K super stone is a great stone. I have had mine for a couple months now and I really enjoy it. Also to tape or not to tape.. that is the question. Tape, first it is cheap, compared to another razor should you trash one ; ) and second why put extra wear on the spine while learning? Slap a piece of electrical tape on there and enjoy your self. Take your time and always ask questions if you get stuck or need help. There are tons of great folks on here.
Nothing is fool proof, to a sufficiently talented fool...

This is the truth! The folks here are great and usually more than willing to help you out. Addison and I have met and I consider him a friend now, if he needed anything I'd be there to help him out. He also hooked me up with a couple great razors on the cheap, as well as a few toss away no brand name to learn to hone on. Plus there were extras tossed in.
The wife and I went back and took him some Brisket I smoked, visited and had a great timeLook sharp and smell nice for the ladies.~~~Benz
