Thanked: 351At what time of day did you used to shave before? If you were an evening shaver like me, then your face would feel slightly less than BBS the next morning. Finishing the shave at that time would improve on the feel, but only because your beard has had a few hours to grow.
The purpose of the first pass in a multipass shave is to mow down the majority of the whiskers so that it is easier to do the remaining passes without too much or perhaps even any irritation. Doing the first pass the night before does no harm, removes the majority of your beard but lets it grow back for 8 or so hours. Doing the additional passes in the morning will remove the sleep time growth, but I don't see any reason why it would technically be closer.
All that said, since moving to a straight razor, I have dispensed with 3 and 4 pass shaves that were common with my DE razors... No, a 2 pass shave is not perfect, but so close I cannot be bothered to do a third. I guess I've shaved enough that I don't mind reducing the time spent at the mirror. Finding good advice on wetshaving made the whole ordeal so much nicer, and I may have overcompensated with doing additional passes... mostly just because I could, in the beginning
In any case, if your schedule works for you, and you like shaving that way.... there is no reason to not keep doing it. Does it do something new.... perhaps?!?! Will I test it, probably not.... I dedicate one specific time to my shave and that's it for the day. Some gents have to shave twice a day, just to look half way presentable and they are not looking for more work either. <smile>
So... just enjoy what many men consider a nuisance or even a pain in the a**.
Still waiting to hear your findings on the Zulu.... I finally manage to put mine down and try my other cantankerous (to me) hone, before I forgot how to use it. The edge turned out remarkably well and seemed slightly less piquant than off the Zulu. Plenty sharp, but ever so slightly smoother. I expect to spend more time on this Jnat, but I really should get back to that Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde coticule of mine. Off the 8K norton, even as a beginner, I got better edges..... edges I could actually shave with, using the coti. Then I discovered Shapton hones and found the money for a set and my edges made another leap forward, but the Coti was there to tame the sharpness and add some comfort.
Today that Coti can improve on the sharpness I got from the Shapton, if I do things right.... it is really an amazing, yet somewhat dull looking rock, and it's bloody slow. But.... I'll never selll it... or maybe I will.....[sigh] And if I sell it, I have to be prepared to never get another one like it again.
Sorry... I didn't mean to highjack your thread.
Regards
