Thread: Destroyed the scales with Desderman Pure

Hi all,

I've been fullish enough to soak a razor in some Desderman Pure to sterilise it and destroyed the plastic scales. There are signs of deformation but fortunately the scales are still functional.

I use Scrubbing Bubbles, hot water and a tooth brush to clean and sanitize razors, have had real good luck using this process.

The scales have lost the glossy finish and have cracked at different points. Hope it shows on the pictures.

Wow! Holly crap... that is very unfortunate. At least the steel is unscathed.

Some chemicals, as you now know, will react with certain substances. A good example would be the episode of "Breaking Bad" (season 1?...) where the two main characters need to dispose of a body. One tells the other to go buy some acid, and plastic containers to disolve it. The dummy cuts corners & tries to do the wretched task in an older porcelain bathtub. Hydrochloric acid happily eats minerals (the stone and metal of the tub), as well as the corpse... and the wood flooring beneath that. BUT, it does not react with most plastics.

Basically, if the product does not specifically mention how you intend to use it (or similar surfaces), it is best to do some research and find out what the ingredients interact with. The shorter the ingredients list, the easier that task is! Lol.

Barbercide works, and only has a minor risk or discoloration of scales. If you have a "Sally's Beauty Supply" nearby, they give you a free bottle of Barbercide concentrate if you buy the Barbercide jar. Well, last time I checked anyway. It was a fairly long running deal, you just need to ask the clerks . The jar looks real snazzy in the shave den, too.

Did a check on the ingredients and this stuff is pretty much alcohol. I read a post in an other thread that alcohol causes damage to acrylic scales. Wish I had seen the post before using this stuff.

My preferred sterilizing medium has become surgical wipes. Quick and easy and I have a large canister of them that are available whenever I get a new razor. I believe that the primary active ingredient is hydrogen peroxide and I've had no issues with damage to scales because I can largely avoid them with a wipe.
