Hello all,
I don't seem to have much to post these days, so I thought I'd post this:
I now have building lather down pat. Seemed like I would never learn. But, never is apparently about a year and a half. Nothing on mirror, the counter or my chest, just on my face.
I'm still learning I guess if you count the chest lather, hahaha.

I am a seriously sloppy latherer and I get it everywhere. Face or bowl lathering makes no difference. I do however always rinse and dry my hands before picking up my razor, every time, lather is slippery and can cause accidents.
Yes, I've got a routine for hand drying as well between strokes or grips. 'Wet' shaving does not apply to hands. :tu
I honestly still have my days. Some days it is perfect some it likes to dry a bit before being shaved. Good job getting that nailed down.

I don't really get lather on the mirror, but it's inevitable that it gets everywhere else. I seriously considered shaving my chest last time I dribbled lather onto it so it wouldn't go to waste, but then I decided it would probably be dry before I finished my face so I let that thought go.
It took me some time to properly lather. It would always be too wet and thin, with the soap running down my arm and all over the countertop. That went on for close to 6 months before I "experimented" and figured it out.

I usually bowl lather, because I make such a mess when I face lather.
i did try face lathering today, that didn't go so well. Besides the mess it didn't thicken up as much as in the bowl. So my guess is if the bowl works I'll just keep it there.
I shave in my boxer shorts and no shirt so that it's no problem if I'm shedding lather. Whether bowl or face lathering, it's inevitable that gravity takes hold and brings some down on my chest, arms, and/or the counter. And, I always keep 2 towels handy so that I can keep my hands and razor dry as needed.
I face lather and it took a while before I learned how to do it without getting it all over the place. I'd say load the soap from the puck with a fairly dry brush adding a little water at a time till you have a thick proto lather on the brush. Then start building your lather on your wet face adding a little water as you go till you get the lather right.
If the lather is too wet at any point you will get it all over the place. If your painting strokes are like someone trying to slap their face with a wet mop you will get it all over the place. If you are too exuberant with your circular stroke you will get it all over the place. Like honing and shaving, lathering up does not take a lot of force or exaggerated strokes to get t done. Lighten up and slow down so you don't get it all over the place. Yes, I know that is no fun and a little OCD but it works, saves time on clean up and keeps the boss off your back for the mess you leave behind.

My lather varies depending on the cream I'm using. Some creams lather better than others. It's one aspect I don't worry about though. As long as it's on my face and my razor glides, it's good enough for me. I always make absolutely sure though, that my hands are dry after lathering before picking up the razor.

the trick for me was getting the consistency right with a wet brush and the right amount of cream (this is what took a year and a half). I soak the brush for 5-10 mins and then shake out as much as a can with out to much force. then squeeze out enough cream, the size of a dime on to the brush and work that in a mug for 30 secs or so.

Has any one else done this? As I shave and the lather builds on the blade, wipe it out off with your finger and apply it to the other side of your face for reuse? Keep doing this till shave is complete. I've been doing this for about three months or so. For me it stretches the lather farther.
Interesting concept ya got there. I've never wiped lather off my blade for re-use, but I do wring everything I can from the brush back into the shave bowl before I rinse the brush.
