Frequency...
Another topic of concern for me is the frequency at which I should shave with a straight razor. I do have some burn today from the blade most likely needing some care, but how long should I now wait before I attempt a shave again? Also, once I know my blade is good to go, how often can I then shave? Is it totally dependent on how my skin reacts? Or are there intervals that I should try to consider? Thanks!

Thanked: 1587It depends, I guess. Initially, you may be well served to shave less frequently and give your skin a chance to recover. Depending on how rapidly your beard grows, this could mean every second, or third, or fourth day. Personally I found, when I first started, that shaving every second day worked well for the first few weeks.

I'm with, Jim. It takes time for your face to get used to the straight, but after a few weeks you can shave as often as you need to, daily will be more than enough since a good straight shave cuts quite close.

In the beginning stages as you're acclimating then two or three times each week would be plenty. After your skin adapts then daily shouldn't be a problem. I stick with three times a week because I can get away with not shaving daily and because I'm a lazy procrastinator and would rather spend an extra half hour in the sack! Also at this time of year I normally ride my bicycle to work and shaving just before working up a sweat can be a bit uncomfortable.

Thanked: 1Your skin will tell you when it's safe to shave again.
As you begin to learn, I'd suggest every-other day at most. If your job "requires" daily shaving, go with what you've been using up until now on the in-between days.
Learning how to shave with a straight is great in the evening. If you mess up, a cut, burn, whatever, you can lotion up and your face will be better in the morning.
I enjoy the day-and-a-half routine. For example: Shave in the morning on Monday; shave on Tueday evening; (no shave needed on Weds.); Thursday morning; etc.
With this routine, I'm always clean-shaven; my face gets a day-and-a-half to rest and heal; and I can enjoy the different mood of shaving between in the morning, and more relaxed in the evening. Win-win!
Hope that helps you think about some options.
Good luck!

Eventually you'll be able to shave daily without any problems.
