Hi. Welcome to Straight Razor Place!

I shave after I shower so washing my face in the shower is my prep. On the rare occasion I shave without showering I will rub lather onto my whiskers and then cover with a wet, hot towel. I will do this a couple of times while before face lathering.

My scuttle gets hot water straight from the tap.

Welcome to SRP. Personally I wash my face with hot tap water, fill scuttle with same, and throw a bit of water onto the puck to soften it up a bit. Once rinsed off I lather with the soap of choice for that day. Mostly face lathering now, though I will occasionally bowl lather, particularly with cream instead of hard soap. I usually do 2 passes, occasionlly 3 on a good day.

I used to be a cold water shaver, for quite a few years, but that is another story. For blades I favor Feather, Gillette 7 O'clock Yellow, Polisilver, Astra SP, Gillette Platinum, or Silver Blue. Getting a blade sampler pack is a good thing, since one man's favorite blade is another man's poison.

This shaving pursuit is very YMMV (your milage may vary) in all aspects.

    Welcome aboard.

I usually shower first so I just wet my face apply lather and shave. These days I use a Mongoose SE razor with feather pro blades. I also use a straight but this combo gives me the closest shave to a straight.

I make my lather in a scuttle. You want to watch water temp because very hot water inhibits good lather and can actually destroy it. Soaps vary in this regard. I use just hot tap water 130F. Also some scuttle makers don't want you to use boiling water. I don't think it would crack the ceramic but you never know.

No mugs, no scuttles, and no hot water. Cold tap water splash, lather up, and shave is pretty much the extent of my prep. I find less razor burn with cool water than warm. But when I do treat myself to a warm water shave my prep is pretty much the same as Speedster minus the scuttle. I've got a ceramic shave bowl that floats in the sink, so I'll float that while I shower. Stays nice and warm when I build lather for my shave.
