Thanked: 0Looking for suggestions for a starter setup
Hi, I've been using disposable razors all my life, I planning to move into using a straight razor for shaving. Only thing I know about this is what I've been reading on the internet. I have also read most of the tutorials on this site.
Like the title says I am looking for some advise on a starting setup, and good places to buy supplies.
I'm price conscious (cheap) but don't want to waste money buying garbage that needs to be replaced, but I don't need top pf the line tools to learn on..
I'm looking at this (https://www.classicshaving.com/produ...-gd-w-box-html).
The razor seems to have some good on line reviews, for a starting set.
The add says it shave ready with free lifetime honing.
Does this company have a good reputation for their honing work?
If you say don't buy this, please tell me why and what would you buy instead.
I don't mind spending a little more to get a decent tool if it's something I'm going to sue for a long time.
Thanks.
Neville

Welcome to SRP and wet shaving NMair
Look at Whippeddog.com. The owner there is a guy by the name of Larry(I believe), you can email him, tell him what you are looking for and he can set you up with some descent beginners gear. The razor, will be no beauty pageant winner but a useable razor all the same and a required strop. You can also get a brush while your there. You can go down to Bath & Beauty Works and get a $10 tube of C. A. Bigelow.
Then you can check out the B/T/S page here and get another razor after you deside you want to go down the rabbit hole.
Wet shaving is amazing and I will never go back to cartridge razors but it is a very deep hole. There are many aspects of wet shaving that people can get into and collect.
Gold Dollar are best for the people who modify the razor.
Enjoy the journey. Enjoy the shave.

Always great deals to be found on razors in SRP's Buy/Sell/Trade area. If you are uncertain whether you will like shaving with straights, this is the best way to go. You can always resell the razor if you find it's not for you without losing much (if any) cash on the deal.
For strops, check out SRD.--Mark

Thanked: 133Not see how well they work but I hear using one of those feather straight razors where you replace the blade are a cheap way to get your feet wet. I believe the shave is a bit different but you will get to see what it's like shaving with something similiar to a straight razor. Or buy the cheapest razor in buy sell trade you like and a strop

Neville - Cheapest isn't always better. However, premium isn't always better either. There are a couple of people that sell beginner sets here that are really of value. You won't pay an arm and a leg and you will get good quality. So if you decide that straight razor shaving isn't for you, you won't have paid a fortune to find out. Watch out for these on the buy / sell / trade and new posts.
Good luck I hope you find what you are looking for!
