    Default Stones, Hones and Bones

    Hello all.

    I need some help.

    Sharpening stones, coticules, hones........

I want to be able to put an edge on my Biskmarck when it dulls, as well as any new straights I may pick up along the way. But I am confused by all of the different types of stones/hones/coticules......natural and man-made; big and small; etc.

Your guidance assisted me in choosing a Dovo Red Bismarck and have it honed by Lynn Abrams and I am very happy with that. I decided to go that way instead of getting a "shave ready" new guy razor. But that made me wonder if anyone has some appropriate stones/hones/coticules for sale used (at a low prices to see if I want to go that route). If not, no problem, I just want to undertand and know for sure I am buying the right product when I spend my money.

    Thank you.

    Hi Waterboo

I have the same razor and it's my favourite, partly because it's seems so easy to refresh the edge, and it keeps it longer than most.

I have a Norton 4k/8k and yellow coticule. I use the 4k side for heavier work (new straights, e.g. Wapienica) and the 8k to refresh (or, more accurately, a very light pyramid 1-3, 1-3, 1-5 on 4k/8k). I use the coticule wet with no slurry to polish.

And that's all you need. Many here will advocate the 4k/8k on its own is good enough. Some will say all you need is a coticule.

I haven't seen many Nortons or coticules for sale on the Buy/Sell forum, mainly because they're so popular people tend to hang onto them.

If you want to buy new stones, pm Howard (his site is http://www.theperfectedge.com/).

    Good luck!
    M.

I agree with Mark, but I like the belgian blue for the first step if the razor is dull but not terribly dull.

My Norton 4000/8000 and belgian stones (thank you Bruno and thank you Iwan - Steelforge ) I bought from Howard. He is a perfect vendor.

    Regards,

I generally get great results from my Norton combo as well. For the extra smooth, I'm very happy with a chromium oxide pasted strop.

Howard has been great to work with. I haven't received my coticule yet, but it is on its way. I can't wait to get my razor's edge where it is supposed to be. Howard will also answer any questions you have about using the stones. In fact he called me up almost immediately after having sent him an email.

    Default Stones, Hones, and Bones

Thank you for the feedback guys.

I called Howard yesterday afternoon and ordered the Norton 4000K/8000K, the flattening stone and (I don't remember the name) the stone to get the slurry started.

As you said, Howard is a fine gentleman who was very informative and willing to answer all of my questions.

    Again, thank you guys.

that would be the synthetic nagura stone

the norton stone doesn't really need a slurry. the nagura stone will speed the cutting action of the stone but many feel the norton is fast enough already. most ppl just use the norton as is.
