Thread: Cant get sharp with naniwa 12000

Ah ok. I saw someone said earlier in this post that all the stones/hones are made for tools and knives and such, so they are not spesific made for razors? And would naniwa be good stones for knives aswell? Also does are the sizes on hones/stones pretty much the same, if its knives or razors? Many questions here hehe, and thanks very much again!

Most synthetic hones are around 3x8" which works well as an all around size. They do vary a little in thickness. I try to get them 3/4" ish thick.

ah yes ok, also are all naniwa hones/stones the same? like when its refered to fot instance 400 grit for kitchen knives, its the same stone as 8000 here for razor, execpt the grit?

Naniwa has a couple of lines of hones and I am not sure of all the differences. I know they make different thicknesses but I am not well versed in all their lines. Gssixgun said the henckels line made by them is good for razors and I have their professional, and super stone series, they also have a traditional line. I expect that all of their hones 1K to 12k are good for razors.

The Naniwa 'Specialty' (sp), 'Sharpening Series'(the thicker version of the sp), and the 'Professional Series' (former Chosera), are all proven razor hones. They are marketed as knife stones. The sp is the new superstone replacement.

I have a Norton 1k/4k stone. The 1k (brown) side seems to do no good. Doesn't seem to remove any metal at all. I turn over to 4k side and metal cones off creating gray slurry in no ti e on the white stone, but takes forever to set the bevel. I have even wondered if my stone is reversed. Is my 1k side defective???

I have used my Norton 1K a lot. It is not as fast as my Naniwa Chosera 1K, but it is cutting. They do need regular cleaning or they plug up with swarf. I can't say often enough at how hands on learning improves your skills and knowledge base at an exponential rate. Meets are the ultimate place for learning at every skill level. There are meets regularly all over the US and a few here and there in Canada. They get put together by people wanting to learn and people wanting to share.

Get Togethers and Meetings
This is the best spot to look. If you are wanting to get something happening near you then post a new thread looking for members to meet with. The really big meets are ones that have been happening for many years, the little meets are often less intimidating for new guys and jammed packed with learning.

I almost never use my best razor hones with kitchen knives as honing knives is more aggressive and can dish the hones, on my 1k I will use both sides, one side for razors and the other for knives. For high grits I use Arkansas natural stones I picked up used to refine my knives, they can usually be found fairly easily and are inexpensive compared to top end synthetic hones
