Thanked: 05000 to 12000 naniwa professional way too high gap?
Hello, im having trouble finding 8k naniwa professional in my country. But i do have naniwa professional 5000 and superstone 12k. Also does anyone know if the difference between regular naniwa and the professional is big on the high grits(8000 and up)

Thanked: 1082Hey,
The Naniwa pros/chosera from the 1k go 1,2,3,5 and 10k, only the specialty/superstone has the 8 and 12k.
I go from the 5k to 10k superstone very easily, it usually takes ~ 20 laps to completely remove the 5k stria. Whilst I dont have the 12k you should have no beef with that jump.

What is your country? Maybe a local natural stone would fit the bill off the 5k, rendering the 8k and 12k synths moot.

Thanked: 4828There are more variables than just the grit jump. What might be an easy transition for an old hand may be a difficult jump for a beginner. If you have some experience and a good loupe you can try it and see if you need something in the middle. I have not gotten a full progression with Naniwa. Currently I have a Naniwa Chosera 1K and a Norton 4/8 and then a variety of finishers. You don't have to stick with t.he same brand all the way through, but that 1K I have is a beauty and as far as I am concerned the bevel setter is the most important of all of the hones.

Thanked: 133try out the 5k to 12k and just see what you think. I would even maybe try adding a thin layer of clear tape after you do some passes on 12k to help refine the edge. Could have your razor finished on a 12k by someone who can take it through stones so you know what it should feel like. Also if you did get it honed by someone else you could go long time just using 12k to touch up stone I believe

5K to 12K no problem If you only need this for a few of your own razors then forget the 8K stone.
