    Default Silicone grease

    Good morning everyone

As for many of you I have more than one straight razor.
This might be a obvious and stupid question. When you have a razor that you are not going to use for a while because you are going to use another one in your collection. Can I use silicone grease on the blade so it does not rust. I am not sure what everybody uses but I have plenty of silicone grease that I use on my seals and O-rings on my fountain pens.

    Thank you very much Roger

I am new to straight razors but have read that Mineral oil, camellia oil and Balistol oil are frequently used. I use mineral oil. Search on rust and you will find many discussions on the topic.

Each person has there own method of rust prevention. Silicone grease sounds fine. On the razors I'm not going to use for a long time I use SRD razor oil on the hinge pin and R. I. G. I get from the gun shop on the blade. Others just us a good oil. I really think any rust preventive will do you fine. WD40 I would not recommend. My gunsmith tells me that that penetrating oil will evaporate and eventually allow the blade to rust. I'm sure others will jump in and give you there recommended options. I also wrap mine in kitchen wax paper. I don't know if this will help anything but it keeps the grease and oil off other things.

Balistol is probably the best you can use. Silicone grease seems like it would be a tad messy and more difficult to remove.

Agreed! I had a group of tools at a friend's place and he used WD40 to protect them. Haze rust over all of them in a month.

Yep, WD40 is not good to protect from oxidation. If you want something you can spray like a can of WD40 I would suggest any of the gun oils out there. RIG is an excellent solution for LONG term storage of any type of carbon steel.

I do not use it myself, but I am sure that silicone grease is just fine.

I use Barricade gun oil on my long term storage razors. It's very light and non messy
