Thread: Getting a new carbon steel with gold, how to take care of it

I have been reading so much that I am starting to forget what I had read. All I want to know is, next time I get my carbon steel razor, how to set it up for first use ( like disinfect ) and then how to take care of it after shaving.

I really do not want to mess up a new blade yet again. I will post some pictures up of the spots on my older blade tomorrow or something.

I usually just wash the razor with warm water and soap. Then I hit it with alcohol. Be sure to dry the razor well and try to keep water away from the pin area.

After shaving, I wipe it down with alcohol (sometimes I skip this step) and dry it very well. Then I strop. After that, I leave the razor out and open to air dry while I dress, eat breakfast, etc. Then I put the razor away. Be careful not to damange the edge while doing all of this.

The best way to take care of a carbon with gold razor is not to get one. If you are looking for a display razor or one you use once in a blue moon fine but for a working razor the Gold wash is very fragile stuff and with use no matter how careful you are the gold will come off with time, probably sooner than later.
