Hey guys, thanks for getting back to me! So bit of background, I’m in Brisbane, Australia, I bought the razor from a place called tommy gunn’s original barbershop, which is a barbershop chain here in Australia, they actually advise me to go to a knifesjop to get it sharpened. https://tommyguns.com.au/collections...-handle-fs2618 - that’s a link to the razor on their website. I know little to nothing about these razors, the guy I spoke to today seemed to know what he was talking about, he said it needed repaired before I could get it sharpened, he’s the one that actually pointed me toward this forum to ask for some help.

We have the same chain here in Canada, and I have not had one that I could do any work to, but they do not look like actual straight razor but razor shaped objects. There are members in your country that you can contact and work out the details as to whether or not the razor you have is worthwhile or if you need to find something else.
https://straightrazorpalace.com/members/onimaru55.html Is very knowledgeable and is likely your best contact.

That has been my impression of the straight razors offered by Tommyguns also. Be sure and contact the member linked to get straighten out with that razor.

I was once interested in bidding on a Damascus razor offered on eBay for what appeared to be a bargain price. After I contacted the vendor and asked how he could offer such an apparently high quality shaving piece for so little, he replied that it was a razor-like object and could not actually be used for shaving. I declined to bid.

For $80 you would think that it could be made to shave since people do shave with Gold Dollar razors. I agree that a knife shop isn't generally the place to take a straight razor for honing.

I'm curious as to what the "sharpening tool" for straight razors is that you were sold? Good luck and let us know who it goes.

Price is no reflection of shave-ability of razor shaped objects.

Are there really $80 razor shaped objects (as opposed to $2 letter openers)? I hear about them but I never really see them. People used to say that you couldn't shave with Gold Dollar $10 razors (not that I like Gold Dollars either but they can be made to work).

What is the business model for a company to manufacture and market $80 razor shaped objects?
