Thats tough to speculate on what someone else might prefer.. Thats a choice he's going to make by himself.. The Centuries old saying applies.. You can lead a horse to water-and we all know the rest. I would have both available to him and do you guys live in the same place? Because if yes to have a mentor on your shoulder while just starting out would accelerate his SR learning curve by leaps and bounds.. Once again if he does live with you do you have to buy anything or do you already SR yourself and have everthing needed?.. If he does not live with you than that might change things... To get to the point in SR shaving were it is just automatic and its just your own personal way you shave takes a long tim and takes a lot of perseverance, time; dedication and most people will think about quitting more than once .. It took me 1 1/2 to 2.0 hrs to do a full shave.. I did start out by using both DE and SR for the same shave.. I realized that because a lot of times i would use the SR for the easy parts but when i got to the tough areas I would use SR until i cut myself or it was taking too long so i would finish with the DE.. Was not progressing with my SR and using the DE as a crutch so i knew i had to go through the gaunlet of only using a straight and I hadnt had a goatee or any facial hair for years.so i wasnt going to cheat that way either... Omg Rfcjr!! I just realized I pretty much highjacked your thread.. .Man i am sorry. I have been on this site for about 2 days straight and im a little fuzzy headed and delirious because of it .. I have to get to bed, back to work tomorrow after 2 days off because of brutal weather... So since you know your son better than any of us as a 21yr old will he have the patience that it will take to become proficient using a straight? Even after getting to that point he will still be a very young man so will he want to spend at least a half hour that start to complete the whole process of a SR shave? I am somewhere around 1200 SR shaves total and i cant get it done and over in 30 minutes no matter how hard i try.. Im.about 40 minutes... Take care and keep us.posted.. SMW
