Depends on who you ask, some say the rounded spike is a square point.

If you mute, one stroke on the corner is enough to keep it from cutting. But really as you get more experience, you may want that point back. In your example to properly reinstate the square point about a 1/16 of an inch will have to come off the end, one could hone the rounded tip, if it was properly muted it could be reinstated in the course of normal honing.

Spike tips are very use full, like most things it is just what you get use to. It’s a razor, it is sharp, be careful and pay attention. I started with a spike and still prefer a spike, though I love the French grind. All my razor have keen points and heels, I shave with the whole razor.

Buy a Vintage razor, you can buy a lot more razor for your money, and I believe you get a lot more razor for your money. I collect one particular brand that you can still buy new, but I can buy pristine vintage razors for less that half the cost of new, and the new don’t hold a candle to the vintage, it terms of shaving and ability to hold an edge, let alone fit and finish.

Right now in the BST, there are several great razors right around $100, a few dollars over and under and 3-4 smoking razors at $30. Any of these razors will last you a lifetime and are great starter razors.

New shave ready Razors are available from Maggards, Classic Edge, Hendrix Classics and a couple other spots that the names of escape me at the moment. Not all people selling new razors ensure that they are shave ready. The above mentioned places do.

Hello Pincorrect and Welcome to SRP...... everyone here has pretty much said it all and well at that. It all comes down to you now. I am just going to add my two cents to the grind part. I have a Dovo full hollow and a Dovo 1/4 grind (wedgier). I have a semi tough stub that grows in all directions. I like that 1/4 grind for that beefier blade edge when I need to mow down the jungle as it were. I like to use my full hollow for more detail shaving as it's more refined. Good shaves to you sir .

Not anymore, and not for many years. All German razor makers use Herkenrath blanks these days. Except Revisor.

That being said and thought about now, don't let a wedgier blade give you any idea of not still applying light pressure, beefier or not either way it'll bite you if you let it.

Just don't confuse Classic Edge with Classic Shaving. The Classic Shaving site is now part of The Grooming Network. What was once a great independent vendor is a shadow of it's former glory. CS advertises razors as "shave ready", but from my experience and reports from others, they do not all meet that standard. However, they do sell a Mastro Livi razor for $950, that is likely to be shave ready.

Thanks RayChem. I looked at Maggards, and I'll check the others. But best of all, I found some nice ones on B/S/T. Actually, I'm starting to understand how Razor Acquisition Syndrome develops.
