Thanked: 0Help for a beginner
I need some help/suggestions please. I've been looking at getting a straight razor. I saw straight razor designs closed and I always heard they were the best to buy a honed ready shave sr. Now that they aren't around any suggestions on a site that had that type of reputation and what route a beginner should go? Thanks everyone.

You've come to the right place. There are members here that will help you pick out your first razor, help you with getting honed and will provide you with instructions on how to shave with a straight razor. No need to go to an outside company! Someone will chime in and help you. I'm still in the learning phase so I can't assist you at this time.

Thanked: 1082Hi, welcome to SRP.
Before you do anything read everything in the library https://shavelibrary.com/ it will set you on the right path.
I would personally buy a straight from the Buy / Sell / Trade classifieds https://sharprazorpalace.com/buy-sell-trade/
Always a good deal to be had and beginner razors always crop up. Most importantly they will come shave ready.
You will also need a strop, brush and a decent soap or cream. There are lots of reputable vendors if you live in the US. I'm sure someone will point you in the right direction as coming from the UK I'm limited in purchases from across the pond. I have brought from griffithshavinggoods though and can thoroughly recommend.
Have fun!

If you are looking for something new, it looks like Maggard has taken up where SRD left off. They seem to be offering new razors that are shave ready. I can't attest to the quality of the honing since I haven't required it in a while. But I trust him. He does great restoration work.

Thanked: 133I'd check out Griffith shaving for vintage straight razors. Great prices imo

Entry-level razors from some of the larger producers of SRs (<cough> DOVO <COUGH!>) cost more than a great buy from the B/S/T yet their quality has dropped off significantly in the past half a dozen years or so. New isn't always best, especially in this niche of traditional wet shaving.
Good idea to post your location (city/state) within your Profile (think it's "Edit Profile" under your Settings) in case you would like to meet up with a mentor near you.
Welcome to loads of fun!--Mark

Welcome to SRP!
Again, Let us know where you are will help a lot to get you the help you need. Buy from our B.S.T. thread and if it says shave ready, it will be ready for you. It's the best way to buy a vintage that is ready to go and at a good price.
Hope to hear from you again. We have a lot of great folks willing to help a guy to learn this old way of shaving. Read the newbie section of our library and the rules. The rules of the forum are not much to worry about but everyone should read them once.
Again, Welcome and let us know where you are. In general. We are not asking for your address. LOL.It's just Sharpening, right?

Hello and welcome to SRP.
I've had great luck with both Griffith and Maggards as mentioned above.
Sick around a while and enjoy your time here.
