Thanked: 0Introductions are in order
Greetings one and all! I'm a new straight razor user, having acquired a Dovo 5/8 round point razor and strop for my birthday last month. I've been shaving with it for about a month now and have really taken to it, although I'm still very much in the learning phase. I used to hate shaving but now I look forward to the evening ritual (my beard is relatively light and can make it through the night and following day without showing much).
I've managed to become reasonably adept at doing my cheeks and below the nose as well as the right side of my neck. The left side is okay and I manage to nick myself on the chin at least twice a week. I've just started using a second pass which has helped to really tighten up the shave but has also caused my face some discomfort due to an increase in nicks (esp. around that chin!) and an occasional sunburn like feel which I've attributed to my face not being used to having such regular exfoliation.
I look forward to learning on here and perhaps even making a few friends.
Mike.

Thanked: 1587Hi Mike and welcome
I've almost always had a goatee so unfortunately I can't really give you any advice on the chin area except some very generic tips like keeping a light touch and keeping that blade moving. Oh, and perhaps a flatter angle.
Also, was your Dovo honed when you received it? I tend to nick myself when the sharpness is not quite there (use more pressure, blade hangs up in the skin).
Anyway, welcome aboard the board. There's heaps of friendly and knowledgeable people here. I'm sure you'll find both help and plenty of friends

Thanked: 0Jimbo,
Thanks! Yes, my razor was honed by Tony Miller prior to my shaving with it. I used to have a goatee myself but promised my wife earlier this year that I'd go an entire year clean shaven. Come January 1, I plan on growing that sucker back, or at least most of it!

Welcome Mike, glad you're enjoying the str8.
Everyone has to find their own way to some extent, but for the chin, I go lightly with the grain on the first pass and then make a horizontal pass across the grain. This gives me a closer shave with no irritation. As already pointed out a light touch is key. Enjoy
