Although I been using the double edge feathers for a time now. I made the move to the straight. I purchased two, a dovo 5/8 and a torrey 5/8 both round point and hollow ground. I did purchase a norton 4k/8k and a four sided pasted strop. Just using the strop I am able to get a very nice edge with the Honed razor. I have tried to hone the dovo but cannot acheive the results. So, its off to a honemeister.
Advice from a newbie. My setup is pretty good and off to a good start. Learning to hone is like chess its easy to learn and a lifetime to master.
A good honemiester knows how to read a razor and what it needs.
So I am starting with a honemeister and little by little trying my own honing.
The shaves with the honed razor is remarkable and as I am learning its gets better and better.
Dont learn to shave with a dull razor! even if it pasted the HHT it could still not be shave ready. Mistake I made.
Being a newbie you dont have the knowledge to buy razors and strops used unless you know what to look for.
As a newbie you need all the edge you can get. SO, for a few buck more your face will appreciate it.
    Hope this helps!

Great advice, Richard. Can't stress the need to start off on the right foot with a keen edge. Have fun!
