Thanked: 0thanks a lot for all the advice, I think out of convenience I will look to buy the norton lapping tool. And I will probably take a look for a inexpensive honed razor from this website, I wonder if there are any Canadians who sell them. I would call and see if I could get my new Dovo done before it gets to me but I already recieved an email saying it has been shipped.
Thanks again eveyone!!!!

Nick, if you pick one up, shipping via USPS isn't that expensive (only a couple of bucks) and you don't get nailed with brokerage fees like you would when they ship via UPS. You might as well take advantage of the strong CDN dollar

nick, if you're getting the a flattening hone, check again the threads with the diamond 325(or sth like that) alternative in mind. i think some members prefer that to the flattening stone. JoshEarl I think is one of the people who prefer the DMT. I don't have either of these hones, but I remember after reading on the sunject I had decided that the 4k/8k+dmt325 combo is what i'll be getting (whenever that happens).
as far as CDN being strong - 'you laughable men'. It's the USD that's week - against pretty much anything else in the world It may actually be worth waiting till 1CDN=1.5USD - you can finally feel the way US-ers always felt about the northern neighbors

Thanked: 335knuckles,
The Norton lapping stone works just fine; you needn't worry there. Confidentially, I think it is easier to use than the DMT plates as the Norton unit is slightly larger than the stone and the DMT plates are the same size as the Norton stones. For me it is easier to attempt the flattening process when the lapper is larger than the lapee. MMVFOBTIHIWFM, or mileage may vary for others, but this is how it works for me.
Actually from what I learned when in the Army and taking Maintenance Management training (how do you set up and run a motor pool), we touched on diesel injector repair. Lapping parts of injectors was done on lapping plates that were probably 100 times larger than the injector parts. We were told to maintain light pressure and work in figure 8's and if done properly our work could equal the factory specs of flat to .00001"
Recalling that, I may be ready to try honing another trial razor.

it certainly will be ok - i think the differences are much less than you can notice at least over your first few months. and bruce has an excellent point that you may actually prefer lapper larger than the lappee
i wouldn't worry the slightest - it seems you've got great gear, just need to put it to good use Just make sure it doesn't end on ebay in couple of weeks - that'll be really sad for all of us here (except, of course, the opportunists looking to feed our AD's on the cheap, which would be 99% of the members)

Nick, you've done well and bought quality gear all along. The lapping stone will last you a lifetime with the few razors you've got to hone, so don't worry. The stone is large enough to make the lapping process easy - in my opinion, for what it's worth (which isn't much at this point), the DMT is REALLY good, but only justifies its expense if you're constantly honing razors, thus needing a LOT of lapping.
Of course, if you get many more razors, you just may find that the DMT is needed, but until you hit that mark, the lapping stone will be just fine. Of course, YMMV.

Need . . .
Do you have everything you need? Well, yes, to get started. You'll eventually want to look into some other "stuff" as well. The quest for the perfect edge is ongoing . . .
Oh, just a comment on your response about there not being a clear answer to the lapping question. You'll find there are many answers to many questions about shaving, some are clear, some definitive, and some are just opinion. The most important question for you to answer at the end of the day is: am I getting a good shave?
