Thanked: 131What a fantastic location Garry!
That place is a dive.
Seriously though if this does go ahead and you want to we could share travel costs somehow or meet up and travel down together. I assume that it'll happen in England somewhere.
Solingen would be a dream place to hold it. Thats not much of a UK destination though

Thanked: 131Alot of our members are in the midlands. Check the google map to find out where in the UK we are (or at least the ones who have listed ourselves).
For me a ticket to London is MUCH more expensive than a ticket to Birmingham or some such.
And dont forget flying may be a problem. How many of you want to get your pride and joy taken away from you at customs?

Yeah I can just imagine trying to explain a suitacase full of razors and other items to UK airport staff ......... "yeah I really do shave with these - hence the scars "
I've still never had the courage to take a straight on holiday with me for that reason .
2 weeks of the year of crappy shaves ..

I need to meet up with folk who have got honing down to a fine art, know how to spot an eBay 'must have' and love getting stroppy! Can we resurrect this thought? If so I am willing to put some time into it as I think it would be a very useful hoot.
I assume that a midlands area venue is still the best choice? Maybe a hotel with good pub and room that we could get exclusive use of? I also assume a few people would want to stay over for one night or two? If these, or other details of your own, seem worthwhile then I am willing to do a search round and get prices and other venue info and feedback. There may of course be a member with a very large barn or mansion house that would be delighted to have a few dozen drunk folk with razors hanging around? Suggestions on a postcard but, as I say, I have things I want to refine and therefore am happy to put some effort into arranging a weekend out. Once a general idea was there with prices we could do a firm poll and book the day.
If this is already being organised and I am well out of step please direct me to the thread.
cheers
Stephen

Thanked: 7Midlands Oak
I'd love to meet some of you guys.
As far as location - I think in fairness we should chose somewhere central so can I suggest somewhere near the Midland Oak (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midland_Oak) which is traditionally considered the center of England. I don't know the area but there must be a reasonable pub not too far away.

I'm still interested... as long as someone else does the organising!
I'm happy with a central location, and would be fine with staying overnight in a hotel.

Thanked: 131Yeah for defo count me in. Depends on the day now though. Saturday is good for me but Sunday is not. And like most folks alot of the week is out. I would only have Wednesday. Since i'm working now i'll need some time to give advance warning to employer.
I dont think it should be a bar. I would LIKE it to be a bar but TBH how many landlords do you know that would agree to a large number of unknown men showing up all wielding knives?
In half-seriousness I think it might be worthwhile investigating advice from police on the organisation of this. Are there any policemen amongst us who are on the forums to give us advice?
Also for me money is an issue. I would like to stay over but since i'm travelling from Scotland as it is i'm afraid the Ritz is out.
I will keep a careful eye on this thread.
EDIT: Oh and as far as organizing it goes I know this lovely town on the west of scotland called Wemyss Bay. What do you think Garry?Last edited by sidneykidney; 02-15-2008 at 06:53 PM.

Thanked: 1I am definitely interested. Keep me posted. A good pub sounds great (I live by the Good Pub Guide), but I also expect the landlord would be unlikely to let a gang of fellas compare cut-throats over booze.
I would enjoy the chance to socialise, learn (honing) techniques and also perhaps a group buy.
I can just imagine my girlfriend thinking me an utter geek on this!

Thanked: 7I think I know a couple of landlords who are reasonable enough to understand that a group of middle aged shaving geeks don't represent any significant danger even if they do have a lot of sharp objects.
As far as the legality is concerned - there is no legal problem with having possession of a sharp object if you've got a sensible reason for having it. Going to, being at, and returning from a meeting of straight shaving enthusiasts would certainly count as a justifiable reason for possession.
I'm not a lawyer but I am fairly sure about this.
