    Default First Decent Shave :)

    Woo hoo!!!

After my fifth try at putting an edge on my wapi I've finally got a shavable razor. Plenty of room for improvement yet but I actually managed to shave this morning without a duelling scar.

I will definitely be back at the hone again to continue evening out my bevel but I've finally got a smooth enough and consistent enough edge to have a decent shave in the morning.

Thanks for the help along the way,
    Bob

Congrats Bob! Shaving with a straight razor
that you have honed sure is a great feeling.
It will only get better from here.

Congrats! It's a game of hit and miss at first but that's all a part of it. As Scott said, it only gets better!

Way to go! Your very wise in using a Wapi. They are just great a razor to learn on and they give such good feed back.

I am a rank enquirer, not even a newby yet. You may remember me from my "Hate Shaving" thread that the gremlins ate.

You say a "Wapi" is a good one to start using as a first razor?

I'm not sure that a wapi is good place to start frankly. A shave ready razor from someone who knows what that means would have been a lot smarter.

I'm enjoying the challenge but truthfully I would have been a lot further ahead buying a decent sharp razor, a pasted strop and worried about everything else later.

I'm happy I've taken the scenic route but I don't think I'd recommend it to those short on cash or patience.

    A little perspective:

norton 4k/8k, dmt 1200, lee valley hone holder,
    .5 micron paste, 3m .5 micron sheets.

I've spent a good 200$ getting my 17$ wapi sharp.

For 217$ I could have bought one of travellers art pieces and saved my hacked up fingers for other things.

Sorry if this is rude, but did you need the paste and .5 micron sheets to get the wapi shave ready?

I can see the use for a dmt 1200 to fix up the bevel on it, but that could be done on the Norton, it just takes a while

Do you find any difference in the way the paste and the sheets work?

For your first razor be sure to purchase a "honed and shave tested" razor. Vintage razors can be found in the Buy/Sell/Trade forum on this site. You could also purchase a new razor and have it honed and shave tested by one of us.
There are some other sources like Tony Miller, Classicshaving, etc that offer a honing service option.

    Did I say "shave tested"?

The 0.5 micron paste is a luxury but a very nice one to use and it costs very little.

    Just my two cents,

    Just my two cents,

I'll take your two cents any day

I better pick up some of that paste then, any differences in brands/types, and where do you get them online, classic shaving?
