Use the Disposable Straight?
Hello All,
I (the Fiance) have been using a cheap disposable straight razor to clean up my neck for a long time now. I have recently gotten interested in using a nice one to shave with regularly. I am still doing some homework about which razor to buy. I am leaning towards the DOVO Micarta, or the DOVO Ebony. Any suggestions? In the meantime I was considering using the disposable straight to start learning with. Is this a good idea? Thanks for the help.

Thanked: 0I'm far from being an expert, but I think...
Hi
Recently I got a friend of mine interested in shaving with a straight razor.
He ended up getting a Dovo Shavette, and my first reaction was to badger him a little but after I thought about it for a bit here's what I came up with.
1. A disposable straight has a cheaper initial cost. If you decide you don't like it, you won't be out for a hone, strop, etc.
2. A disposable blade takes sharpness out of play, so you can focus on your shave rather than worrying about if you just goofed up your edge on the strop.
3. In my opinion, it's a good way to "test drive" shaving with a straight razor.
I think the only thing you'd have to worry about, is being sure to use a fresh blade, not one that's had a couple rounds on your neck.
And as far as choosing a razor... I hear that when beginning, a good high carbon steel blade is a bit easier to hone and maintain than a stainless. Since I heard that my experience has been limited to high carbon steel only, but it seems to be working out so far.
Hope that helps! if not, have no fear, I'd imagine it won't be long before the guys who actually know what they're talking about start chiming in.
happy shaving!
