Four passes on your first shave ! Did you get any razor burn ? I have 2 razors from altima55 , and they are both great shavers . He is the "real deal" on ebay . His razors are everything he says they are . You may want to strop more . I do 25 round trip laps on the linen , and 40 on the leather before each shave .
Greetings , from Dundalk , Maryland . The place where normal people , fear to go .

I use the towel that I originally put on my
face to steam it. I just wipe the lather
on that. I really just dab the lather off rather
than wipe the blade. I would never use
my bare finger to wipe the lather off the blade
    for the reason you mentioned.

No razor burn 12 hours later! Still smooth.....

Razor from altima55 is wicked sharp and a very smooth shaver.

Is there any problem with just running the blade under running water? (forgive me if this is blasphemy, but seems like it would work?)

I run it under scalding hot water to keep the blade warm to my face, AND also clean.

Well......since this seems to be the "first shave" thread.......I'll throw my name into the mug !

First (serious) try tonight with a straight (actually two).

From past posts, you know I have a new T-I, and a seriously old Case.

Tried them both tonight (Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008 @ 10:20 pm).

Lathered up with G.F. Trumpers Sandalwood cream....(I really wanted this to be a special occasion), and God as my witness, I tried to do everything EXACTLY as Lynn did in his video......hot towel......(even over the lather).......EVERYTHING !

Started with the T-I.........after I realized that wasn't going "according to hoyle", I switched to the Case.

OK, "Pro's & Con's"......I didn't cut myself !.......It WAS pretty enjoyable......It WAS relaxing (especally the hot towels)......HOWEVER !

I didn't shave myself !........When I use my Sensor II, I can get close to "Baby-Butt", but my try tonight left my face just as stubble-faced as when I started ! ! !

Can't understand it.........I honed & honed & honed & stropped & stropped & stropped until I was SURE they were as good as they can get !

(Is it possible to get razor-burn without actually taking any whiskers off) ?......if it is, I think I might have at least accomplished that ?

@ RNFuller: I think maybe it is preference. I sometimes dip my razor into a bowl of hot water (Seriously guys I am lacking even the most basic of necessities) but fount I have just ever so slightly touched the bowl with the razor. I have tried wiping the blade on the palm of my hand which I read about somewhere but personally don't like having a handful of shaving soap and whiskers, so I just use a damp cloth, but if you do this, you must seriously watch the edge or it will have an ill effect. Congrats on your first shave.

I believe that it is helpful watching the DVD even 100's of times, I have too but.
You can keep watching the DVD until the cows come home, its not always going to help you get a flawless first shave. Coming from different forms of shaving to straight shaving is a huge change. Most people do have difficulties with their first few shaves. Good luck, they will improve soon.

I haven't followed your previous thread(s) so will ask a basic question. Did you have one of your straights honed by a professional first so you would have a reference point when doing your own honing? If not that could be your problem.
I recommend you have one honed by Lynn or Joshearl (those two honemeisters names are stuck in my head, but there are many more) then you can know what it is to shave with a truly shave ready straight and also it gives you your reference point for honing.

Good luck to both of you, and if I haven't already welcomed you both. Welcome to SRP.

Only one I can think of is the risk of accidently knocking the blade on the tap and damaging it.

That is what I do, and have had no problems in the last year.
