The pasted balsa is a nice idea. There's no real issue with a paddle, though it seems like most people eventually prefer a hanging strop. I'm trying to arrive at a cheap setup that a beginner won't feel the need to upgrade for a while, so if its a rig that most people would end up adding to within two months or so, its not really the "real" investment.
