I've heard that the best blades come from Solingen and Sheffield. Some folks say don't buy anything else. Also, I've heard to stay away from stainless blades since they don't hold an edge as well.

Stainless is supposed to be harder than regular carbon steel, so it should actually hold a slightly sharper edge. The thing is, because it's so hard, it takes much longer to sharpen. Kind of like TIs are supposed to be, actually. (Next razor purchase... )
I don't actually own any stainless razors (haven't even gotten into honing yet), but this is what I've picked up from reading. Hope this helps.

Solingen and Sheffield are the sources of a lot of good and excellent blades... but people like to forget the American makers most of whom could give the others a run for the money.... think Geneva, Robeson, Shumate, Christenson, Noonan, Utica, Waterville they are all great.
as for stainless it is a bit harder to get properly honed but the edge lasts longer and needs less maintenance.Be just and fear not.
