Thanked: 0Advice on my first razor
First off this place is great!
I'm looking to purchase my first ... well everything, but mainly need some advice on the razor. I'm a student, so I don't want anything fancy (I don't have a lot of money ... yet), but I would like to get something quality that's going to last, and be a good "performer". After reading a bunch I'm pretty sure I should be looking for an already honed, round point, carbon steel razor, and am wondering if this one from Bill Ellis (I'd like to support the group) would be a good choice? It doesn't specifically say it is carbon steel, but is it safe to assume it is?
Should I be concerned about the amount of hollow?
Please let me know if this razor gets the thumbs up, or if I should look elsewhere for now.
Thanks!
Mat

Thanked: 95Hi and welcome!
This is just my 0.002 cents:

It seems to be a good one, and based on Bill's reputation I can't imagine him putting a bad razor up for sale, just be sure it's "shave ready"

I believe it's an safe assumption.

No, just get a razor to start with. You'll end up worrying about blade sizes and different grinds soon enough.
Please let me know if this razor gets the thumbs up, or if I should look elsewhere for now.
Thanks!

If you want to buy a complete kit send The Toper a PM.

Like a lot of folks around here i like Bill's work... yes that is going to be a carbon steel razor... nicely polished up.
Bill's razors come shave-ready unless otherwise stated.
for all your other needs Tony Miller at www.thewellshavedgentleman.com is a great choice for a starter kit both with or without a razor, his strops are the best.
or Jim at www.vintagebladesllc.com will be able to fill all your needs.Be just and fear not.
