One tip that I do not see talked about much is using a canned gel....if you are new to making lather on your own this will be a TREMENDOUS help....I myself can make great lather by hand using a soap or cream but I find that the lather from a modern gel is FAR slicker and provides a better cushion.
Are you referring to some of the non-foaming gels from
vendors such as Zirh and Anthony Logistics?

No, recently I tried some Gillette gel for the hell of it and noticed that the lather was incredibly slick and cushioning...dont get me wrong I love making my own lather but i find I can get good results from either. I have heard positive things about the Zirh gel, I believe Sephora will give you samples.

I agree with the canned gel statement. I make my own lather everyday and love it, but when running late I use Edge Gel. I don't enjoy it nearly as much, but the results are hard to argue with.

i highly recommend the red russian strop from illinois strop company, and i dont really see where you would need a full three inches. if you can get that good of a shave on your first try, stropping will be a cinch.
