What's proper technique/preparation for ATG pass?
I've been shaving for a few weeks, but have yet to go ATG due to lack of knowledge of angles, proper holding technique, etc. I just have been doing 2 passes WTG, but I REALLY want to get a BBS shave since I still have some fuzzy areas even with 2 WTG passes.
Do I re-lather if I'm going to do an ATG pass? Or use warm water?
Any tips?

Thanked: 13249First thing ya need is a Frigging sharp blade, then just take yer time and figure out the proper blade angles to keep the correct skin to edge angle....
I will warn ya though if you have a lot of stubble left from the WTG pass you might have one of two things going wrong.... A less than keen edge or a less than optimal shaving angle... I always strop before going ATG just because I "think" it brings the best edge foreward so to speak I always re-lather between every pass no matter the direction... Hope this helps...
Oh yeah forgot about even better skin stretching that's really important with ATGLast edited by gssixgun; 03-15-2008 at 11:43 PM.

GSSIX you just saved my life lol I was going to attempt to do an ATG pass my next shave (a few days) but I don't have my DOVO in yet, and there is NO WAY I'm doing an ATG with my disposable straight! I feel the dullness every time I use it!
Am I in any position to attempt an ATG when my DOVO and strop come in? Or should I really get comfortable with technique and angle until it's a second nature? There are some tough spots for me to get on the neck still -- face is BBS with 2 passes, but the neck is toughLast edited by Gags1892; 03-15-2008 at 11:52 PM.

Definitely will. I'm going to wait until my 5/8" DOVO comes in to do ANY ATG shaving

Yeah, I ordered the Classic Black 5/8" with the pre-honed option from vintagebladesllc.com today. Also says the razor I ordered is normally in inventory pre-honed, so it should be sent out immediately.

While I believe that many wetshavers go ATG, there are those who say that it's only asking for trouble. Just an FYI.
Personally, having used a DE for over a year, I go ATG in most areas when I want the uber shave results. So while I am a newb with straights, here are my tips for going ATG which should still apply:
1. wet your face and relather
(1. b. strech your skin)
2. do not put too much pressure on the blade
Hope that helps.

Thanked: 369This may go against what you read in many posts here, but you really should never go against the grain. Or at least do it rarely, maybe as a last resort to get that BBS, if you must...
Preferably shave with the grain and be happy with your results. Over time, and with practice, you will get better, and your WTG shaves will be more and more acceptable to you.
ATG shaving, in general, is prone to problems. Why practice a bad habit?
