    Default Noob Beware

So I bought a couple fixer uppers off of ebay. "Excellent condition, no rust or pitting" "maybe ivory handle" whatever. The blades looked good from the one picture taken 5-6ft from the blade. I should have really thought why there was only 1 picture from 5-6ft away.

I wanted to get a couple "cheap" blades I could fix up and use, I had planned on getting one of them honed by a pro and practice honing with the other.

I received the genco really fast. The celluloid handle was easily cleaned up with some acetone, it came out a beautiful white, I did a great job. What I didn't know about was a thing called scale warping. I had no clue. I was reading up a bit trying to find any hints on how to clean a blade and with a sick realization came across a post regarding warping.

Having never "seen" a good straight in person, I cleaned and scrubbed the heck out of that handle just to realize it was in bad shape afterwards. No problem I will build my own scales! So I go ahead and start sanding a bit so atleast I'll have a good blade... Not so fast. After a bit of work I revealed pitting and oxidation across the back edge that was covered with black.

I sat for a few minutes The entire razor is worthless. Sure you could remove a bunch of metal on the edge AND replace the scales but I was trying to NOT spend a bunch of money....

Noob Beware, don't waste your time or money buying off of ebay. Buy from these guys offering shaving sharp blades or get a new one.

    I wish I did.

It's all good. Post a WTB thread in the BST forum and someone will help you out, I'm sure.

If you want to buy new, I can HIGHLY recommend www.vintagebladesllc.com. Their service is quick and they have a wonderful Dovo selection.
