    Default A little help :)

    Hello All.

    First post here.

I wanted to get into straight razor shaving for months already. BUT havn't had the time to learn all about it. Theres razor picking, honing, stroping, soaps, just SO MUCH information that I feel like it would take me months until my first purchase. I couldn't wait any longer.

I just went ahead on eBay, and almost blindly, picked a razor and bid on it until I won it.

This is what I won http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEWN:IT&ih=024

    Decent for a newbie?

Okay, now for the brush. The same seller has some brushes, but they range from 40 all the way to over 100. Can somebody just pick a good one out for me? I dont want to go all out and get a brush with a nice handle, just whatever works best is fine with me for now.

And for stropping, any recommendations for a first from eBay? Or would you not recommend eBay for this?

Soaps? Any recommendations for a first?

And I know that the Norton honing stone is the one to get. So I ordered one for $70 off eBay.

    Thank you all in advance,

    aram

    Great Razor...

For the brush....you cant go wrong with a Crabtree and Evelyn Best Badger for 39. For the cost its a great deal. YOu can always go up from there.

Strop. Go go www.thewellshavedgentleman.com and get the practice strop. Tony does great work.

Soaps....whatever works.....its all subjective. This all depends on if you have stuff locally or not.

I would really get someone to hone the blade for your first attempt at straight shaving unless your really comfortable doing this.

THese are just my opinions mind you.

Welcome to the world of straight shaving....

If I were you I'd be done with this seller. Get your brush from somewhere else. You'll get certainly cheaper and likely better brush. I'd recommend buying a shavemac or simpson, somewhere on the 100 level. A lot of vendors to choose from. If you prefer a custom made brushes instead of the mass production there seem to be a couple of very good options.

I'd say you can't go wrong picking a soap from www.thegentlemensquarter.com. I'd probably get her sampler and see which scents you like best, the danger with that is that you may end up liking them all.

    +1 on the strop recommendation

    Welcome Aram!

I agree with Isaac's post above....If you get a shave ready straight you can wait on the Norton for a while and get a pasted paddle strop instead....should keep you in good shape for a long time

Feel sorry that you got robbed by Ebite so will let you have one of my Vulfix brushes for almost half of what it cost me.
