As long as its smooth and no nicks or really worn areas and not the really stiff hard leather types it should be OK. Just be aware that many "leather"belts they sell these days are not even leather but some synthetic stuff.

Thanked: 4I have been using a leather belt to strop with since the beginning of the year. At the time I asked the same question you did. Tony Miller gave me some advice on prepping the belt. But said that it would work. Having seen that Tony always seems to find and answer these strop questions I will assume he will probably give you better info then I can. However, make sure the belt really is leather, make sure it is smooth and nick free, You may want to take a glass bottle filled with warm water and smooth it out. then go over the belt with a pumice stone. It will help if the belt is 2 inches or wider.
