Thanked: 02nd Straight Shave Completed - A question
I just completed my second shave. I did not go against the grain just yet. I figure that I'd build up some experience first.
My question is about shaving the neck. I'm having a hard time shaving upwards (towards the nose). In fact, I nicked myself today. I find it easier to shave downwards on the neck. I was able to accomplish this today. The only concern I have is that for me this is against the grain on the neck. I don't seem to get irritation by going against the grain on my neck on the first pass. Is this a common experience for newbies? Am I doing something wrong? Any suggestions?

Thanked: 267I am going to offer some advice that I learned the hard way. There is no way that on your 2nd shave you should be doing anything but shaving N-S. You should just kick back and learn the basics. You probably don't have the skin stretching or your face mapping down yet. If the skin is properly stretched a N-S on your neck will give you a very good shave on your neck. When you are a couple of weeks into this learning curve and your skin is use to it then go across the grain both E-W and W-E. ATG is an advance technique and that includes understanding how to get and use a really sharp razor and, I am sticking my neck out here, with both hands.
Good luck,
Richard

the n-s shaving for the first week is generally a good idea... even if it seems to be against the grain in some areas.... especially if you get less irritation this way.
Be just and fear not.
