Thanked: 0Thinking about razor #2
I am relatively new to wet shaving, but I enjoy it a lot. I recently purchased a DOVO "Perlex" 5/8 and love the shave. I would like to even out the wear on it by buying another blade. I have two thoughts:
1. One of the Thiers-Issard Sheffield Silver Steel razors
2. A vintage blade, such as a Wade & Butcher
I worry with the prices of vintages going up as they are, and would hate to get a bad deal, but I am just looking for razor #2 that I would enjoy (and looks nice).
I know that there are many different types of Wade & Butchers, but what are the general opinions as between the two above?
Thanks in advance

I think they are both good razors. Assuming a high quality W&B, I would probably prefer it to a TI. I also like new razors as they have fewer issues. Unlike other types of razors; straights have beauty and artistic appeal, along with utility. I can't help but buy the ones that "call" out to me in some way.

Thanked: 0Therein is the difficulty. I do not have enough experience to know whether a certain Wade & Butcher would be "high quality" or not. I guess it is less risky to buy a new razor ...
For the Wade & Butchers, I kinda like the Spanish point or the ones with a barber's notch.

I've heard a number of people say they prefer the W&B's to the TI's, but that's just hearsay.
If you're worried about getting a good deal, keep your eyes on the B/S/T section. You really can't go wrong with buying from one of these guys!

I think with a little study and some more input you'll be able to pick out good razors. Its not too hard. A new TI would be a good start until you pick up on the nuance.

Thanked: 0Thank you for the input. After looking on ebay, I decided that it would be best to stay here for any purchases that I might make. I think I might go for the TI for now. The W&B will more than likely be razor #3.
/What am I getting myself into buying all these razors ...

Thats a good plan. Two or three razors aren't bad at all. Keep in mind that you'll get the best shaves by working with fewer razors and RAD will pass you over without incident. You have a lifetime to purchase and enjoy razors.

Stick to the German or English steel. You won't ever be disappointed.

Seriously though....you can always return a new TI if it isn't up to your standard. That's not really the case with a W&B, but I've yet to hear one bad comment about them.
I think you could flip a coin and not be disappointed, although my personal choice would be the W&B (if a German blade wasn't an option, of course).

Thanked: 0Good words. You know, I often hear of love/hate relationships with the TIs. I never really hear why though ...
