I went and picked up one of those hair trimmer straight razors last night. I just wanted to get the feel of using a straight razor. I figured for $4 the least I would end up using it for was to trim my side burns.
I printed out the art of straight razor shaving and read it on my way home from work yesterday (almost missed my stop). I started with just the cheeks to get a feel for the angle and pressure . Well after doing both sides without a nick I got brave and did my jaw line. This has always been a trouble spot for getting a close shave for me. I wasn't expecting much, but I wanted to see if I could do it without blood. I ended up doing my whole face with the grain and no blood loss. Then I got overconfident and tried my chin against the grain. Mind you what I had accomplished so far was the equivalent of what I would have done with a disposable. So as I put pressure on my chin BAM I nick myself and remember that I didn't lather up again.

All in all it was a fun experience and something I look forward to learning more about this lost art. I already started going through the FAQ's and sticky's (I'm a forum junkie). I especially like the listing of good/bad razors, gives me a good starting point to start searching.
