Thread: Damaged edge?

Hey guys, I've got questions for youz:

So I found a razor at the local thrift store type place for $6, and another for $12. The 12 was a Wade and Butcher that looked pretty good, just needs to be honed and cleaned before I use it.

The $6 one is clearly $6 for a reason. It's like a serrated razor. I wish I'd checked the blade before I bought it, but it was taped over and I didn't even think about it. I think it was a Levering? It said ground in Hamburg and it was $6 so I thought "Ooo. Mine!"...alas, not so good. Is there any hope for this one, could it be re-ground or something? Or, is this just a good $6 lesson in careful buying?

Also, any suggestions for good honing services near Michigan?

go ahead and post a pic of the edge. you can find members that live nearby here, though I don't recognize many of the ones in michigan. if you dont mind mailing it, PM afdavis, I've worked with him and he's a really nice guy.

This is the broken one...that on even closer inspection, looks too damaged to be saved. There's a decent crack in the blade, as well as the chips. I'll consider this a lesson in being a more attentive buyer i guess...



The other one though, doesn't look so bad. I feel like it just needs to be sharpened. I took it to the local barber, who said he'd show me a few things, and he did a few strokes on the hone to show me what to do, but didn't sharpen it to shave-readiness.





I dunno, any thoughts? Would the second one be usable after a honing, or would more work need to be done? I know there are a few blemishes and marks and stuff, but I think those are only aesthetic (right?). I suppose I could send it to Lynn, he lives in ohio (according to the map) and that's not so far from me. I might also just wait though until my blade from Bill comes, to see how I fare with a sharp razor before I take the plunge and send this one away... We'll see I guess. Any suggestions? I haven't even had my first shave and I'm already starting a collection...this is scary....and i don't even have a strop yet...

In my opinion the Wade is probably worth what you paid for both so I wouldn't sweat it. Get a little Maas and clean the second one up send it to a honemiester the wades can be a bit tricky to hone from what I hear and you should have a nice shaving razpr!

Congrats! The W&B is a real find, it is a grind that is seldom seen and should shave very well. The second one to far gone
to recover. Use it to practice your honing stroke or restoration.

I guess my only question now is who to send it to for honing? I know there's a short list on one of the stickys at the top of the newb forum, but I wonder if there should be a bigger, more comprehensive list of people who are willing to hone blades.. I hope something like that wouldn't get abused somehow, because it'd be really helpful.

I'm sure any of the guys on that list would be more than willing to answer any questions. Send them a PM. I believe Lynn is the closest to you...he is in Eastern Ohio. If you are looking for someone to do resto-work on that other blade, you might PM some of them with a link to this thread (or with pics of the razor) and just ask. Who knows, I believe some of these honemiesters are good enough to hone anything!
