Thanked: 0DE for a backup?
Hello...
Here's another newbie question.
I know it may sound backwards and in a way it is.
Just started with a straight razor and was wondering what would be a good back-up. I do wanna get another straight, but I was also thinking about maybe getting a DE as a back up or for travel or when I just don't have the time to give myself a good shave.
I am really trying to get away from the disposables, so I figured a DE would be a better choice.
Just let me know what you think.

I have a DE for backup and it works well. I make sure not to use it to clean up behind the straight though because I want to force myself to get better. It is nice to have for rush jobs or if the straight is out for honing.

I think you'll find many of us here have a DE on hand for times when we are in a real hurry. I know I have one.

I have a late 40's Gillette DE that I keep handy....always have problems getting my chin just the way I like it with the straight!

I have a dozen DE's I haven't touched in over a year.
For a speedy backup I use a shavette with half a DE blade.

I have a red tip on hand for when I am sick, jittery, or in a hurry. I had the flu earlier this week, but I insisted on trying to shave like I wasn't horribly sick anyway. The flu tends to make me lose a bit of my ability to focus which led to a nice 1" reminder to focus. I switched at that time to the safety razor for the duration of my illness. I would advise always having a backup plan.

I use my DE very rarely. Usually when I'm too tired to even strop but need to get rid of the stubble for whatever reason. If you really want to get one, get a Feather Portable. Pauldog on SMF was selling them for something ridiculous like $10 shipped, NIB. They're a 100% ripoff of the Gillette Tech design -- simple, easy to use, unbreakable.

Erick...hope you get over the flu soon...this time around it seemed to hang on for a little while.
Oh, and I have several DE's I keep and use on occasion for times when I'm in a hurry, or if I just feel like using the DE.

I recently grabbed a shavette for travel purposes, but
I have yet to try it out. I also have a couple of nice
Gillette TTOs that hang around for looks. They don't
see a lot action although they are great shavers.
