Ok so a good Barber hone, and the 4k? Would my standard fine knife sharpeners work to re-keen the edge?

4k then 8k then barbers hone.

Your "fine" knife sharpener is probably no more than 1200 grit more likely only about 600 grit. Knife hones are barely fine enough to use to get nicks out of a razor and using one is likely to make a very dull razor even duller, at best.

The first thing to learn when sharpening razors is to forget everything you know about sharpening knives.

AMEN. Knife sharpening techniques will kill your razor. This is an entirely different beast. If your newto all this just get the barber hone or send your blades to someone in these forums to give them a good edge, that will get you started. Then study the honing forums here until you have a game plan that you can run with.

i would only use my knife stone (1200 grit) to set the edge and nothing else. But I'll get the 4k and the barber Hone for now and the 8k in a week or two when i get paid again.

A LOT of good information in here. eBay is always an option...you can find some really nice stones on there, just make sure you stay away from the Zeepk brand.

Are the 4k/8k cheaper when bought separately? Or as a combo stone? If it's the latter, you may just want to wait till that next paycheck and buy the combo...

You may want to ask yourself what you need a hone for. If you are buying shave ready or close to shave ready razors you might be able to start with a finishing hone or pasted paddle strop. They will keep a razor going for a good long time. Then you can buy lower grit stones in the future if you get into honing "dull" blades. I think you can get the 12K Chinese stone in 2"X8" for $20.00 + S&H?

    I definitely agree with this.

You also have the option of checking in the B/S/T and placing a wanted ad. Actually, there was just someone wanting to get rid of a hone they weren't using... Let me see if I can find it.

HERE IT IS - Check the end of the second paragraph. You might sent him a PM.
