Thanked: 0Thanks for the welcome everyone. I was a reader of SRP long before I ever became a member, and it's been a plethora of good information here. I'm especially glad to see the diversity of locations for people on this forum. I've got a trip planned tomorrow, so in about 32 hours, I'll be having my first straight razor shave on European soil.
Sorry to moviemaniac and Black Beard, but my next shave will be on Dutch soil and not Austrian or English. Maybe some day soon.

Thanked: 3795Great story, but you know what I think the oddest part of your story was? The fact that you hung your strop on your garage door track! I mean, yes, it is a nice secure/stable place to mount it and sure, it does have those holes in it but come on, it is just a tad inconvenient!

Thanked: 0I rent my house so I couldn't go pounding any bolts into the studs of the bathroom to hold the strop. Plus the towelbar is about as unstable as you can imagine.
So . .. . um . . . I did at least declare that it was a mistake, right?

Thanked: 3795Ok, just so you know, I wasn't criticizing you. At worst, I was making fun of you!
Actually, I was imagining having to go through that myself and how inconvenient it would be. I was imagining running through the house with a towel wrapped around my waist and lather on my face and a straight razor in my hand and working my way through the garage to finally get to my strop.
A suggestion for you to overcome the loose towel rack--skip it. Assuming that you have a sturdy door knob, tie a shoe lace or heavy wire around the door knob and hook the strop to that. If needed, use a carabiner as an intermediary between the strop and the shoe lace. Somehow, some way, you should be able to hang your strop in the bathroom. Consider it to be your manly right!

I use my sink drain lever to steady my strop. It is working for me

Welcome, and great post! I can sympathize with every one of those mistakes (except taking it to a Sharpist in Texas...I'm in IN ). My first purchase was a Zeepk razor and strop. As soon as I found SRP, I bought a shave-ready Geneva from drfred. Best purchase yet!
Good luck! Keep us posted.

I feel better already
Um. I feel better already? It was a good story, I just wish I had a Zeepk to blame for mine...

Great story. I think we have all at some point identified with your mistakes. I still have some scars on my face from my mistakes though.
It is really the best way to shave, as you stated before shaving was just a chore to me.

Hehe, wish I'd videoed my first attempt and put it up along side all the experts on YouTube. After the first pass and a cold water splash, things were so watery red that I had to break off and laugh for a few minutes.
