Thanked: 4First shave.
Well I got tired off trying out my honing skills on my coticule. It split the HHT from my chest and cut hairs from my arm but no matter what technique I used I could not seem to get it any sharper. SOOO, I decided hell with it I'm shaving. Ewwww that was seriously painful, pulling galore, by far the worst shave I have ever had. (about a weeks worth of beard growth). But hey I suppose it is a learning experience and motivation to learn how to hone properly.

Thanked: 0hopefully this experiance doesnt put you off the hobby, its a very rewarding experiance to shave with a straight razor.
My first shave was not great, but pretty good and I look forward to many more to come. I have a little irratation and some small nicks. and it will only get better.

Thanked: 4I doubt it will put me off straights, I'm damn stubborn and a cheap bastard. The way I see it I am way too invested in this to give it up, plus my pride won't let me stop until I get it figured out.

Thanked: 0^^^
Besides, what else is there to go to if you can't master a straight? Back to expensive disposable Mach 3s, Fusion blades, or useless electric razors? Straights are pretty much the last and most extreme step before you get into hormone therapy to eliminate facial hair.
That's when (a) straight goes out the window. Pardon the pun.

You're making it more difficult by trying to learn two different skills at the same time, honing and using an str8.
Either have your razor profesionally honed or buy a vintage one shave-ready, this way you can concentrate on your shaving technique.
I'm trying to learn both myself, but I have a DOVO Shavette and a shave-ready Wapi, while I play with the hone and another Wapi.

Thanked: 4Good point Navaja,
I've actually got a few razors at a honer now, just getting antsy waiting so I had to try.
One plus that I have to say already, no razor bumps or razor burn. I was so sure that I would get it. Strange!Last edited by stupidyank; 05-21-2008 at 10:04 AM.
